The manipulative Shannon Rutherford is Boone's step-sister. She has frequently been displayed as (in the series) a cunning and extremely clever person, more so than people give her credit for. Shannon has grown up in various places around the world, having lived in France, Australia, and the United States. Because of her step-mother's exclusion of her from the family money, Shannon has a long history of conning Boone into giving her large sums of money, frequently through his "buying out" of her abusive boyfriends. In fact, it was one such con which brought both of them to Australia. However, this was to be her last con, as her then boyfriend explained the situation to Boone, and later defrauded Shannon of the check Boone had written to "save" her. That night, after arriving at his hotel room while intoxicated, she seduced Boone, sleeping with him just before their flight from Australia.

Since coming to the island, she has done her best to keep everyone at arms length, frequently behaving selfishly. Nonetheless, Sayid had broken through to her while attempting to decode French words on Rousseau's maps, and they had been developing a romantic relationship. However, with the death of Boone, Shannon became enraged with John Locke, and when Sayid refused to kill him before also interfering with her attempt, their relationship took a turn for the worse.

In a flashback, she met Sayid for the first time when the two were waiting to board the plane at the airport in Sydney. He asked her to watch his bag, and she told a security person that an "Arab man" had left his bag unattended in the waiting area. She told Boone that she did this just to prove to him that she can do whatever she wants to do.

In Raised by Another, Shannon gives her age as 20.

Having only started acting professionally five years ago, Maggie Grace already has an enviable list of credits.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Grace made her television debut three years ago as Martha Moxley in the telefilm "Murder in Greenwich." She also starred in the telefilm "12 Mile Road," opposite Tom Selleck. In addition to a recurring role on "Oliver Beene," she has guest-starred on "Law & Order: SVU," "Cold Case," "Lyon's Den" and "CSI: Miami."

This fall Grace will be seen in a starring role in the film "The Fog."

She currently resides in Los Angeles.
